Tools - accessed from within SketchUp

NOTE!! The ""insert!" and the Tools features works only from the engineeringtoolbox plug-in inside of SketchUp. Add and edit parametric objects to the SketchUp model!

Color:
change color! - of the selected object(s) - may be slow for some more complicated objects (save your model first!)

View:
iso - top - front - right - left - back - bottom

Make Component:
make! a component of the selected object. Note that all objects from the Engineering Toolbox are inserted as individual groups. You should transfer a group to a component sharing the same definition when there is more than one instance of the same object. Tips! Rename the object to its final name before making it a component (in outliner or with right click and entity info).

Rotate Object(s):
degrees around red, green or blue axis! (select object(s) first)

Move or Copy Object(s): - move or copy (multiple) selected objects
move/copy! no. copies red green blue (offset from current position)
Make advanced geometric constructions with multiple selections, multiple copies and the offset.
Tip! - Use "Make Component" to save space and reduce computer load when working with multiple copies.

Move an Object to another Objects Position
move! Select two objects - click "move" and one of the objects moves to the position and angle of the other object. Handy when moving between axis systems.

Change Insertion Point
You can change the position and angle of an inserting object by pre-selecting an existing object before Insert! The inserted object will inherit the position of the selected object. Handy when working with non-default axis.

Insert Line: - use this feature to add reference lines
red green blue - Start position
red green blue - End position
insert!

Insert Horizontal Plane: - use this feature to add reference planes
insert! red (size) green (size) blue (vertical position)

Insert Vertical Plane: - use this feature to add reference planes
insert! red (horizontal position) green (size) blue (vertical size)
insert! red (size) green (horizontal position) blue (vertical size)

Insert Box: - add a box
insert! red (width) green (depth) blue (height)

Insert external Component: - add an external component from the internet by adding the component url
insert! name url

How to add the Engineering ToolBox to your SketchUp

Download engineeringtoolbox.rb to your SketchUp plugins directory. ("Right Click" the link above and select something like "Save As")
Exit and reload SketchUp!
Select the "Plugins" menu and the "Engineering ToolBox" submenu and a page like this one opens - and you are running!!

Note! that you can use the engineeringtoolbox.rb

in Sketchup 8 too. Save it to the plugins folder as desribed below.

Windows user! Be aware that some browsers in windows saves the plugin file engineeringtoolbox.rb with a .txt extension. The extension must be changed to .rb.

Note! The SketchUp plugins directory is located somewhere similar to
"C:\Program files\Google\Google SketchUp X\Plugins" (Windows)
or
"Macintosh HD > Library > Application Support > Google SketchUp X > SketchUp > plugins"
(Mac)
(Mac users look here!)
(X is the SketchUp version on your computer)

If you have problems with the saving permissions to the folder - try to download the file to your download folder - open two file manager windows - and drag the file from the download folder to the plugin folder. Change permissions if required.

SketchUp works with Linux under Wine. Since the engineeringtoolbox plug-in uses the SketchUp Webdialog feature implemented only for IE on Windows and Safari on Mac - IE on Wine is probably required. This is not tested and feedback is wanted.

How to use the Engineering ToolBox

After loading Sketchup and the Engineering ToolBox from the menu - navigate to the wanted component in the navigation menu above - and select "insert" to add the wanted component to your SketchUp model.

Note! The SketchUp Engineering Toolbox is an online resource updated continuously. You need internet connection to operate.

For some components parameters like length, color, offset and more can be modified before insertion.

Customized components can be inserted by changing parameters in the dialog boxes at the end of the component lists - and clicking "custom!"

Selected objects in the model can be manipulated - rotated, moved, colors changed and more - from the Tools section.

Assistant objects like lines, horizontal and vertical planes can be added.

Some Tips and Tricks

The most efficient way to learn SketchUp is by watching the tutorial videos.

Organize your model in groups - add components to the groups!
Example: Use separate groups for construction steel, piping, the different HVAC systems and more.
Always keep an eye on the model in the "Outliner" window.
Use layers to organize and control the visibility of the model.

The most convenient way to copy an object is by selecting it, using move or (m) and pressing Ctrl (makes a copy) before moving.

Use the rotation tool on this page to precise rotations of components like bends, pipes ...

Precise moving of a object can be done by selecting a point in the object that can be connected to a point in the new position (like a edge on a component, surface, a midpoint or similar).

Mac User?

There is a problem with the former Sketchup 6 - Ruby - Safari implementation on Mac computers.
Latest Sketchup is tested and works fine!

Some minor problems - like components and color options - randomly exists on Mac's.

Occasionally Problems in Windows

Due to the way Internet Explorer (used by Sketchup in the Web Dialoges) handles its cache there may be occasionally scripting problems in Windows.

Just reload the window - use F5 - to refresh the cache.
